Tuesdays are for Tacos!

Tuesday night means taco night at our house. It's a new tradition that we have started. It helps that I love mexican food, and the rest of the gang likes it too. It also gives me a chance to make homemade guacamole which, after all those years at Don Pablos, is awesome if I do say so myself:) Maddie likes to have a soft taco then a sort of chili bowl concoction for seconds, Chris like her tacos straight , Jackson likes to make a mess with whatever he gets and I like to make double-deckers with a soft tortilla glued to a crispy taco shell with refried beans. After dinner I passed out on the floor with children crawling all over me until Jackson kindly woke me up with a whack on the head with a rolling pin. So much for that list of chores I had for today. I got about half of it done, but got some good time with the kids in. If you will excuse me I now need to go ride and work off those tacos!

Points of Interest

About me:

* Yes I do love to ride my bike - will do it anytime of day or night given the opportunity and have started riding to work to build base miles. I am truly blessed to be able to ride at all. BTW Congrats to Levi Leipheimer on his Tour of California win last week.
* No, I don't ride that beater in the picture, although it would probably be a great workout!
* I am hopeful to do a triathlon someday.
* I am growing in faith, thanks in large part to the wisdom and guidance of some very intelligent people who hold me accountable and help me stay pointed the right direction.
* I dearly enjoy mexican food - cooking as well as eating it. I could spend hours perusing a Diana Kennedy cookbook.

About my family:

* For some reason God gave us some really great kids - they are amazing in so many ways and they definitely keep me young!
* My wife has an insidious disease that presents a daily challenge for her with no letup. Many times I feel helpless to do anything for her and other times I do the exact opposite of what she needs from me. It is absolutely a situation of peaks and valleys.
* I was born raised in Fort Worth, Texas and most of my extended family is there. They are all great people who have put up with a lot of stupidity out of me over the years. Yes I have boots - elephant skin actually. I'm sure they will survive me:)

About my faith:
* I am learning daily about grace and forgiveness and love but unfortunately have a long way to go, particularly in trusting God.
* I feel I am in the right place to grow as a Christian and learn proper stewardship of what's been given to me.
* I know God knows His plan and I need to slow down and listen to what He wants from me.
I am thankful that He listens to my constant praying. There are time when He chooses not to respond, yet I know I am heard and that's fine with me.

It Takes All Kinds

...of opportunities to create a worship experience. Could be at church in a traditional service setting. Could be at work, or at play, or anytime anywhere. The bottom line is that any opportunity to spend a moment with God is a good one. Jacob is said in the Bible to stop and "lean on his staff". To me, that infers that he stops for a few moments to connect. I like to refer to it as carrying on a running dialogue with God - I take a moment and "lean on my staff" and "connect". That's what God seems to want and, in doing so, it helps to keep my spiritual tank full.

Discipline

I had it once. I recall being meticulous in planning my scheduling so I could accomplish the things I set out to do. However it disappeared somewhere along the way with the kids and life and...

Fortunately I have had some people who really seem to care who are willing to provide some direction and feedback (coaching, if you will) to assist me in regaining some of the discipline that I have lost. God does what He does and He knows what He's doing and I am excited as I feel small changes for the better happening. Many thanks to the wonderful people from the church and others who provide that simple but vital spice of life called kindness.

Now, back to work...

Have a great day!

That Was Great

I rode my bike to work yesterday. Not such a big deal with the exception of this:

On the way home at 10:45 PM, I was cruising toward the house when IT happened - I was on a slight downhill with a stiff breeze at my back when I exactly matched the velocity of the wind so it felt like I was in a completely calm bubble. All I could hear was the singing of the tires on the pavement and the whishing sound of the aero spokes cutting through the air and the ringing of the wheels as they transmitted the road vibrations in a sweet, very soft harmony. There were no cars around, the moon shone through the clouds and trees and, for a moment, God was right there next to me. I experienced total peace in that period of a few seconds and, believe it or not, it had a profound impact on my day. I'll never forget it.

If you sail or ride or surf you get it. It's like when the sails are perfectly set and taut without a hint of luff, or when you drop onto the face of that wave and your board cuts in perfectly - you get a few moments of time where everything you could have on your mind melts away and you...just...are. In a place of real beauty.
